Urueña is a small village located in the north-west of the Valladolid province of Castillia y León. Just off the A6 highway that connects Madrid with La Coruña and only at 66 km west of Valladolid, Urueña seems to be out of the path of tourists or travellers that are too busy or more interested to see the larger and more known beauties of Spain. However, Urueña is a place that looks like it stopped in Middle Age time, a fortified locality with houses and buildings crowding within the walls on a hilltop with a beautiful panorama towards the Castillian landscape and about 250 friendly inhabitants that can reveal you the real way of simple living of the Spain's villagers.
Enter the fortified village thru the Puerta del Azogue built in the 12th-13th century, on the North side, to rich within 2 minutes the Iglesia de Santa Maria del Azofue, built in the 16th century in a renascentist style. Keep the Calle Real (Royal street) to head to the village's walls in the south-westerd side; there are stairs to climb up on the walls right where the Puerta de la Villa is. Once on the walls a beautiful typical landscape is revealling on the south side, and a large panorama of the village on the other side. Walking on left on the fortified wall the 11th century rectangular shaped castle can be found, built for the king Fernando I el Magno. Then go back in the village and take some time to walk on the streets and alleys. You can find some places to eat in a more rustic, traditional ways or maybe to buy something from second-hand and antiquarian bookshops that are concentrated in the locality, Urueña being a member of the I.O.B.-International Organisation of Book Towns.
